Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family, it was managed by her mom, grandmother and godparents. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford started to become fascinated by acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she realized that this school wasn't right for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
